Upgrading a Wireless Network and Distributed Audio System

Upgrading a Wireless Network and Distributed Audio System with Ubiquiti Unifi Equipment and Sonos Amps For Music Streaming

Table of Contents: Introduction

Introduction

A family was upgrading their internet connection to fiber but was unaware of the limitations of their current networking equipment. They were experiencing a bottleneck in their internet speed due to an old switch that was not capable of providing gigabit speeds. The client also had a mesh wireless network system and a Denon receiver with a speaker selector that distributed sound into four other zones. They wanted to upgrade their audio system with individual control over each set of speakers and the ability to play different music for each zone. LA Techs was called to upgrade the networking system and audio system to meet their needs.

Challenges

The client was unaware that their networking equipment was causing a bottleneck in their internet speed, and they were also experiencing limitations due to their mesh wireless network system. The audio system was not meeting their needs, as they were unable to control each set of speakers individually and play different music for each zone.

Solution

LA Techs recommended upgrading the networking equipment to a gigabit-capable Ubiquiti Unifi equipment to remove the bottleneck in their internet speed. The Unifi equipment was wired to receive the full signal at all times, no matter which part of the home someone is in. The devices were also attached directly to the wall, so they do not sit out in the open and without any exposed plugs that can be disconnected or things stuck into.

LA Techs also recommended upgrading the audio system with four Sonos Amp devices to power their existing speakers. The Sonos Amps allowed individual control over each set of speakers and even played different music for each zone. The Sonos streaming devices replaced the Zone 2 ouput of their Denon AV Receiver, as the source for the four zones.

Sonos Wireless Speakers

The family upgraded their networking system with Ubiquiti Unifi equipment and now have lightning-fast internet speeds, but what about their sound system? This is where Sonos comes in. Sonos is a wireless speaker system that offers a range of benefits to enhance the family's entertainment experience at home.

One of the most significant benefits of Sonos is its ease of use. Setting up Sonos speakers is incredibly straightforward, and the Sonos app makes it easy to connect and control all your speakers from your phone or tablet. With just a few clicks, the family can start playing their favorite tunes, podcasts, and audiobooks over WiFi. Sonos also works with voice control, so they can ask their virtual assistant to play music hands-free.

Another great feature of Sonos is its ability to stream music over the network without slowing it down. Unlike Bluetooth speakers, Sonos speakers connect to your home network and use WiFi to stream music. This means that you can play music from your phone without worrying about slowing down your internet speed. Plus, with the Sonos Boost network extension, you can improve the connection for larger systems and homes.

Sonos also offers a wide range of music services, so the family can enjoy all their favorite music, podcasts, and audiobooks in one place. By adding streaming services to the Sonos app, they can easily switch from Spotify to Apple Music, or even listen to the radio. Sonos app users have access to millions of songs and can discover new music that they never knew they loved.

One of the best things about Sonos is its ability to group speakers in different rooms. This means that they can connect two or more speakers together and play them in sync. For example, they can group the speakers in the bedroom and the kitchen so that their morning playlist is already playing when they start making breakfast. Or, they can connect the rest of their system to their home theater so that everyone can enjoy the big game even from another room.

Sonos is incredibly versatile and easy to expand. The family can easily connect new speakers over WiFi to create the sound system they want and expand it at any time. With the Sonos app, they can customize their sound system and set up custom alarms or groupings, making it easy to control their entire home entertainment experience from one device.

Results

The client was impressed with the upgrade of the networking system and audio system. They were now able to experience high-speed internet without any limitations due to their networking equipment. They also had a reliable and fast wireless network system. The Sonos Amp devices provided individual control over each set of speakers and even played different music for each zone. The Sonos streaming devices replaced the Zone 2 of the existing Denon AV Receiver, and the client was happy with the upgrade of their audio system.

Conclusion

LA Techs was able to provide a solution to the client's networking and audio system needs. By upgrading to a gigabit-capable Unifi equipment, the client was able to experience high-speed internet without any limitations. The Sonos Amp devices provided individual control over each set of speakers, and the Sonos streaming devices replaced the Zone 2 of the existing Denon AV Receiver, providing the client with an upgraded audio system.

FAQ’s

Q: How do I know if my networking equipment is limiting my fiber internet connection?

A: If your networking equipment is rated for 10mbps/100mbps connection speeds and you upgrade to a fiber internet connection, your connection speed will be restricted and you won't be able to take advantage of the full speed offered by fiber. This is because your current equipment is not capable of handling higher connection speeds.

Q. Can I use my existing speakers with a Sonos system?

A: Yes, if your existing speakers are compatible with a Sonos system, you can use them with the Sonos Amp device, which powers existing speakers and allows for wireless control and streaming of audio content.

Q.. What is the benefit of using a wired network instead of a mesh network?

A: In a mesh network, every link between routers/access points will cut the speed in about 50%, which can put additional limitations on your network. With a wired Unifi network, you receive the full signal at all times, no matter which part of the home you're in, and there are no speed limitations caused by mesh network links.

Q. How can I control my Sonos system?

A: You can easily manage your Sonos system from any room using the Sonos app. The app allows you to browse music, radio, podcasts, and audiobooks, adjust the volume, group speakers to play in sync, set custom alarms, and more.

Q. What kind of support is available for my Sonos and Unifi systems?

A: Our AV installation company offers in-person training sessions to get each of our clients up to speed with any changes or new equipment in their system and how to control it. We also offer Monthly Service Agreements where we monitor devices and remotely reset or update them as needed, providing ongoing support to ensure client satisfaction and comfort with anything new in their home.
